Metro by T-Mobile review: An in-depth analysis

If you love the T-Mobile network, you could save money by opting for one of their MVNOs like Metro by T-Mobile.

With a number of features and perks included with their plans, Metro by T-Mobile offers some attractive packages.

However, their plan options and prices are not as flexible or budget-friendly as other low-cost carriers, so below, I've provided you with a detailed Metro by T-Mobile review.

I'll cover its plans, network choices, performance, and more, so you can decide if this is the best carrier for you.

What is Metro by T-Mobile?

Metro by T-Mobile is an MVNO - Mobile Virtual Network Operator. Most low-cost carriers like this one operate on a major network. In this case, the network owns the MVNO, so it uses its own infrastructure to provide service. You might know this carrier as MetroPCS, which merged with the big guy in 2012 and assumed its new name.

What makes Metro by T-Mobile different?

Metro by T-Mobile plans offer a number of extra features, including a ViX subscription, with every plan. On top of that, you get the discounts available through its T-Mobile Tuesdays program.

And with the top tier unlimited plans, you get mobile hotspot data and Google One membership.

How much does Metro by T-Mobile cost?

Their three main plans are all unlimited, ranging from around $40 - $60 a month for a single line. They do offer multi-line discounts, so the more lines you add, the more you can save. But this is still nothing compared to the discount with other T-Mobile MVNOs.

While the carrier offers Heritage Plans on request, I'll be honest: they're a terrible deal (for example, 10GB of data for $40). All of the current regular plans have unlimited data with varying levels of extras, like dedicated mobile hotspot data. They also state they are for a limited time.

Is Metro by T-Mobile a good value?

If you love the T-Mobile network and need multiple lines, then Metro by T-Mobile plans could be a great solution. By going through its MVNO instead of directly from T-Mobile, you can save money while keeping your reliable coverage. But, the plans are not competitively priced in comparison to other low-cost carriers.

Metro by T-Mobile features

My viewpoint - Is Metro by T-Mobile any good?

Short answer: Metro by T-Mobile is owned by, you guessed it, T-Mobile. This gives the carrier a leg up over other MVNOs because it owns its own network. Coverage is provided on the T-Mobile 5G & 4G LTE wireless network, offering customers similar services at a more affordable price. It's important to note that there is no one carrier or plan that is best for all types of data usage. So, we've compared carriers and plans to assist you in finding the one that suits your individual needs.

Is Metro by T-Mobile worth it?

If you know you've got great coverage on the T-Mobile network and you're a high-data user, you may consider this low-cost carrier.

However, with the top three advertised plans being unlimited plans starting no lower than $40 a month unless you are buying multiple lines, it is all too familiar with big wireless. Saying that it's easy to find the high-speed data allowance, which is capped at 35GB. A decent amount of data for most people.

According to this 2023 JD Power report, the average monthly price is $157. So although Metro by T-Mobile's perks may seem attractive at first, by unbundling your phone from any unnecessary features, it's possible to get a single-line unlimited data plan for around $25-$30 a month with MVNOs.

You can certainly still save on a plan with Metro by T-Mobile, especially if you're looking to buy multiple lines. But it's worth checking out all of your options.

Would I use Metro by T-Mobile?

Short answer: Metro by T-Mobile's plans are expensive compared to other T-Mobile MVNOs and are all mostly unlimited, with prices starting at around $40 a month for a single line. To me, that doesn't offer good value for money. I don't need unlimited data due to being connected to Wi-Fi the majority of the time. So getting a plan with a set data cap at a cheaper price is better value for my needs and my pockets!

Metro by T-Mobile FAQs

Recap: Is Metro by T-Mobile the best cell phone plan?

Owned by T-Mobile and powered by the T-Mobile 5G & 4G wireless network, you'll find a cheaper way to access the network compared to going directly to T-Mobile.

There is a large selection of MVNOs out there, and Metro by T-Mobile cannot compare in value for money. Mainly because the major savings only kick in if you buy multiple lines.

But everyone has different needs and preferences when it comes to their phone plan, so here are some things to keep in mind when deciding whether this MVNO is right for you:

  • Plans: Unlimited plans are the focus of this provider, so there are not many flexible options.
  • Coverage: This carrier is known as a full-service MVNO due to its network ownership. T-Mobile offers dependable coverage in the majority of locations.
  • Phones: You have the option to either bring your own phone or choose from a modest range of new devices.
  • Features: Unlike most MVNOs, this one offers extra perks with all of its plans. But it's worth deciding if you need these before paying extra for your phone plan by bundling them in.
  • Customer experience: The general user experience is okay, although there are differing views on customer service.
  • Promotions: This carrier frequently offers new customers a deal on plans and sometimes even free phones, although they require that you come into the store for those if you're bringing your number.
